Cinemas – including Hailsham’s Pavilion and the popular Depot in Lewes – will receive funding from the government to help them reopen as lockdown restrictions are lifted after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Pavilion in Hailsham’s George Street is set to receive £43,003 and The Depot, popular with Eastbourne film lovers due to its proximity to the railway station, will get £125,392.

The grant money has come from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund to help the culture sector reopen and recover from the coronavirus outbreak and follows on from last week’s announcement that the Devonshire Quarter including the Congress Theatre and the town’s conference and sporting venue would receive £1.8 million.

A spokesperson at the Hailsham Pavilion, which is a theatre and live music venue as well as a cinema, said, “We are now looking ahead to the near future when we will be able to reopen our doors to our lovely customers and volunteers again. Please be assured that The Pavilion is in safe hands and when the time is right we will be back safely screening films for you all.”
