ITV Meridian reporter Kit Bradshaw was passing the Broadbridge Heath Extra store when he spotted a sign which told customers the store was open just six hours a day from Monday to Saturday.

The sign informed baffled shoppers they could only visit between 6am and 12pm (midday) when the store is actually open until midnight.

Sharing a picture of the sign on Twitter, Kit said: “Tesco has just made me doubt myself in a way that I never thought I would.

“Can we all agree that 12pm is midday and not midnight, right!?”

After posting the amusing image Kit’s tweet went viral and it has now been liked more than 10,000 times.

He added: “Wasn’t quite expecting this level of interest in *telling the time*. Guess I’ll have to come to terms with the fact that my most liked tweet ever is about a blooming Tesco sign.”

But the tweet has now sparked a wider debate about telling the time.

One person branded the tweet ‘hilarious’ while another urged the supermarket giant to adopt the 24 hour clock to avoid confusion.

One said: “It’s only 12 on the Greenwich meridian, rest of the country is still before or after due to the earths rotation.

“The time difference between each longitude (each degree) is 4 minutes. So if it is 12 noon at Greenwich, it would be 12:04 pm at 1 degree meridian and so on.”

Another added: “Strictly speaking, neither am or pm is correct after 12. Should say noon or midnight to avoid any confusion.”

Tesco said the store is undergoing maintenance works at the moment and the firm is aware of the incorrect sign which it plans to update as quickly as possible.

A spokeswoman confirmed the store opening hours are Monday to Saturday 6am to 12am (midnight) and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
