“It was disgusting; I wouldn’t expect that from a store like Morrisons.

“The thought of it was what really got me. For an hour after that I was being sick, because I knew what I had just eaten.

“The lesson is to order a pizza, because I was having a lazy day and thought I’d buy a pizza. But then I thought ‘no, I’ll make my own lunch’.”

He also found a larva on top of the remaining spinach in the bag, he said.

Richard said he returned that day – July 2 – and the manager refunded his shopping, worth around £15.

But Richard wanted compensation for what happened. After being offered £10 – which he said was an ‘insult’ – Richard has been waiting for a further offer, he said.

After being approached by the paper, a Morrisons spokesman said they had resolved the matter.
