Alex Vincent is popular with customers, as he walks the car park collecting trolleys, and known for his hilarious jokes.

He worked for Safeway at the High Street site before it was transformed into Waitrose in 2004, starting by delivering leaflets across the local area.

Andy Masson, manager, said: “Alex is a stalwart of the branch who has kept our customers happy with a fantastic attitude while mainly working in the car park area and he has built up many relationships and friendships with his customers.

“Alex battles on through snow, rain, wind, ice, hail and the hot weather without ever complaining.”

Alex has written many books of local interest, including Lost Villages of Sussex, Roman Roads of Sussex, Tide Mills of Kent and Fulling Mills of Surrey. He is also heavily involved with Worthing Archaeological Society and Worthing Astronomical Society.

Mr Masson said: “Alex carries out a huge amount of research while carrying out his hobbies, which pre-Covid meant travelling around the counties.

“Alex loves a nice locally-brewed ale and he samples these in his travels while researching his interest. He is also a keen photographer whose photos regularly appear in the local papers and, of course his books.

“Alex keeps finches and he is hoping to add another one to his family very soon. Alex loves a joke and these will be missed in the PDR, which he shared before, during and after his shifts, and his jokes are hilarious.

“Alex walks everywhere he goes and could be known as Worthing’s Forrest Gump. He will be popping in for lunch regularly to keep in touch with all fellow partners and friends.”

Alex asked for a party as his retirement gift and once the Covid restrictions are lifted, this will be organised. In the meantime, he was presented with an engraved tankard, bottled ales, cakes and a card on Tuesday, his last day.
