The land, on the corner of Pocock’s Road and Burton Road, was up for sale with Barnard Marcus on Monday (February 3) at an auction in Covent Garden, but according to the company’s website the plot was ‘unsold’.

Colin Belsey, Conservative councillor for Ratton, said, “I am just delighted it has not sold. I could not see why anyone wanted to buy it. I certainly would have opposed it.

“It’s a nice bit of land we want to keep. Common sense has prevailed, if nothing else.”

Mr Belsey said he is still unsure about who owns the land but will be having ‘at least’ one more conversation about it at the Town Hall.

Residents in the area voiced their concerns last week with the potential sale.

Janice O’Connell, who lives in Pocock’s Road, told the Herald, “It’s terrible. If they start building on that bit of land when does it stop? We can’t lose all of our green spaces in Eastbourne.”
