Primark store manager Phil Simpson had his head and eyebrows shaved off to raise money for The Beachy Head Chaplaincy.

So far Phil has raised nearly £1,700 for the charity, which has no government funding and relies on local support.

The chaplaincy needs around £200,000 each year to fund its work which involves daily foot and vehicle patrols across a four-mile area around the cliff tops.

Phil said Primark Eastbourne has been a supporter of the charity for the last two years through a number of events including his head shave.

He said, “Mental health is, in my opinion, one of the biggest challenges facing the NHS, the police and other vital emergency services.

“All of us have someone affected by suicide in some way, be it a loved one, work colleague or friend.

“The goal for my head shave was to raise £1,230. I decided to go all out bald because the money we raise will support the great work of the chaplaincy.

“I’m delighted to say that we have smashed that total and I am really grateful to staff and customers for joining in the fun and helping to raise the cash.”

The Beacon centre manager Bill Plumridge was the one left with the clippers.

Bill said, “It was a great idea for a genuinely worthwhile charity. When Phil asked for a bit of support I jumped at the chance to grab the clippers and help out.

“I won’t be changing professions just yet, but it was a great fun for a great cause.”
