A charge of 70p per hour would be introduced between 6-8pm on a one year monitoring period at the council car parks neighbouring the entertainment venues.

Despite concerns from both the theatre and cinema the charges could discourage visitors, councillors voted to approve the trial, which is expected to earn £98,500.

Council leader Tony Dignum said he did not believe the tariff would put off theatregoers, as a two-hour charge was three percent on a £45 ticket.

Councillors also noted that alternative free parking was available to visitors at either venue a short walk away and disabled parking would remain free.

The changes would be implemented as part of revised off street parking charges from April 2017.
