Chairman of Adur District Council Carson Albury will officially open the new store in Brighton Road on December 10.

“With Lidl and Aldi these days their products are so good,” he said.

“This new store is top of the line with lots of parking. Everything you want, it’s going to be there.

“I don’t know what it will do to the other shops in the area but personally I’m looking forward to it.”

Currently, he said he shopped at the Lidl and Waitrose in Worthing but was excited at the opportunities the new store would bring to the Adur area.

“I think the Lidl in Shoreham is going to be very, very successful,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

Speaking ahead of the opening, he said he believed he would be having a tour around after cutting the ribbon at 8am.

“All in all, it’s an excellent opportunity for the people of Shoreham and Lancing and all of Adur to have a choice in the way they shop. That’s the most important thing,” he added.

His enthusiasm was echoed by Lidl UK’s property director Jason Gratton, who said: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Shoreham.

“It is wonderful for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion plans in the UK which will see its existing store portfolio of 620 stores increase to up to 1,200.

The Shoreham store has created 40 new jobs and Lidl said it boasted ‘state-of-the-art facilities’, including a 1286sqft sales area, bakery, six tills and more than 100 parking spaces.

Mr Albury added: “I can see people coming from all around to the area initially just to try it out. Once they do that and if the shop is as forward thinking as they normally are, they will hold onto a lot of those customers. It will be good for the area.”

He said it had been a long wait for the store to arrive, with Lidl frequently waiting for larger stores like Sainsbury’s and Tesco to establish themselves before opening up themselves.

“I know their prices are excellent and that’s competition for you,” he said. “That’s what the world turns on.”
