The petition was set up on December 11 by concerned resident Diana Mackay after a popular car wash company was told it could not return when the former Budgen's site was taken over by Sainsbury's.

Residents rejoiced at the launch of the supermarket in November but the opening was marred for some who were saddened to see that Johnny's car wash company, which had set up in the car park more than nine years ago, was no longer there.

The petition has so far garnered more than 450 signatures and Diana said the intention is to present the petition to Sainsbury's.

Diana said: "I was absolutely thrilled to bits and obviously I am not the only person who wants the guys back.

"Please please give us your backing and any family members that have not signed who also used the car wash - join the club of wanting the boys back."

Fatmir Sinani, known as Johnny to his customers, said: "I just wanted to say how overwhelmed I am by the support I have received from the Midhurst community. I am extremely grateful for the lengths you have all taken to help me try to bring back my hand car washing business to Midhurst.

"I am humbled by the messages sent, letters you have written and the signatures you have given.

"If not now, I hope that I can find somewhere to operate from in the not-so-distant future."
