Sainsbury’s agreed to pay £136,000 on supporting small firms around the town as a condition of the planning permission for its branch on Shripney Road.

The money is being spent by Arun District Council by offering advice and support, grants and funding to employ apprentices through the Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Programme.

Twenty businesses have received grants to develop their work or take on an apprentice. Many others have benefitted from the advice, funded by the council’s LEAP project, and available through the University of Chichester.

Regis Removals has used its apprenticeship grant to employ Courteney Walters as its financial and administrative assistant.

David Wride, the company’s managing director, said: “Courteney is a really valuable team member. The idea behind the apprenticeship for us was to attract a young person to the business and train them up to management and directorship level.

“She has undertaken a number of important roles already since joining us four moneys ago and has a rosy future with the company.

“I would recommend the Arun District Council apprenticeship grants and have spoken to another business to encourage them to apply for funding.”

The 20 grants approved so far comprise 13 business grants and seven grants for apprenticeships.

The grants have been used to contribute towards funding training costs, employment, equipment and designing websites.

The Arun Business Partnership Steering Group, made up from independent businesses, meets to consider the application and make recommendations to the council’s cabinet.

Crown Properties was another Bognor business to benefit from a grant.

Co-founder and senior valuer Hannah Halls said: “The grant has helped us advertise and market the company and this has allowed us to get valuations and sales in Chichester, which wouldn’t have been possible without this money.”

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun’s leader, said the use of the grants to help businesses grow had to help Bognor’s economy.

“These grants will provide vital help for Bognor businesses and will give young people a tremendous opportunity to develop their skills as apprentices so they can start on a good career path.”
