The retailer – which has a store in Hastings – is reportedly reducing the number of shop assistants in stores.

The news comes weeks after the reopening of 124 of its stores following the coronavirus lockdown.

In a statement, Debenhams said: “The trading environment is clearly a long way from returning to normal and we have to ensure our store costs are aligned with realistic expectations.

“Such difficult decisions are being taken by many retailers right now, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to give Debenhams every chance of a viable future.”

Debenhams cut 4,000 jobs when the company went into administration for the second time in a year in April.

In January, a total of 20 stores were closed, affecting another 1,000 jobs.

Debenhams said no further store closures have been planned following these latest job cuts.
