A licensing panel approved plans for six to seven street bars between Upper Rock Gardens and Eaton Place from 11am to 6pm on Saturday June 1.

Sussex Police had objected to the bars, but withdrew this after carnival organisers submitted improved security plans.

Ian Baird, safety adviser to the event, said he was delighted, adding: “I’d like to say how happy we are to have found a good working model with Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council in order to deliver an excellent cultural event with the residents of Kemp Town.”

This year’s carnival is the first since 2016, and is being supported through a partnership with Brighton Palace Pier and approved funding from Arts Council England.

It will take place in the streets of Kemp Town once again, and is organised by the Kemp Town Carnival Community Interest Company (CIC), made up of people and businesses from the community.

The carnival is also in the process of sourcing reusable cups. The aim is for people to either buy them or pay a deposit and return them to reduce litter.
