Lewes shops reopen with new safety measures

Shops in Lewes have reopened today (June 15), following the government announcement that non-essential retailers could welcome customers again.

Here is a list of what some of our local retailers are doing to ensure customers and staff are safe – provided by Lewes Chamber of Commerce.

Ashley Price, secretary of Lewes Chamber of Commerce, said: “Please do your best to support all shops as they reopen, if they ever needed your help it is now.”

- Barbican Carpets will be reopening on Monday, June 15, so if your carpets and rugs have seen a lot of wear over the last couple of months, then pop in and see David.

- David said: “We at Barbican Carpets miss our customers and being a part of the hustle and bustle of Lewes as it goes about its daily business.

“It will be good to reopen and move a step closer to bringing normality back into all our lives.

“There are tough times ahead, but Lewes is a diverse and vibrant town and will bounce back quickly.”

• Louis Potts, Cliffe High Street

- Louis Potts has had a revamp and will be reopening on Monday, June 15, ready to serve you with any of your tableware, cookware, home preserving, textiles and glassware.

- Ella said: “We have missed our shop and lovely customers so much, and are really looking forward to opening our front door again.

Lockdown has been a strange experience; our website has been continuing to operate…and we have noticed a substantial increase in local orders online, which means so much to us! Our family has been overwhelmed with the support from our town.

• Marston Barrett, High Street

- Marston Barrett is reopening on Tuesday, June 16, for jewellery – both new and antique/vintage – watches, clocks and silver items.

- Andrew Glaysher said: “This has been a very difficult time for many. Let’s hope that the worst is now behind us. With this in mind we intend reopening on Tuesday 16th June and very much look forward to seeing everyone again.”

- W. E. Clark & Son is reopening on Tuesday, June 16. Customers can again get their hands on jewellery and watch sales.

- David Clark said: “We are looking forward to reopening our doors on Tuesday, June 16. Initially we will be opening from Tuesday to Saturday 9.30 until 4pm. We will have reduced staffing, and 2 customers or couples in-store at any one time. This will allow us to adhere to best practices relating to safe operation.

“It has been a very long time since we traded last on the March 23. However we have been very fortunate to have a strong online presence, which has allowed us to stay in touch with our customers.

- Baldwins is not reopening the branch to customers as yet, however it is very much ‘open for business’ and keen to help people looking into holiday enquiries for 2021 and beyond.
