An angry couple say they and many other people travelled to Chichester today for the Wednesday market - only to find it missing.

Philip and Jacqueline Moger came all the way from East Preston for some French cheese from one of the stalls.

Philip said: “We were really surprised when we got to Chichester to find nothing, no notices or any warning that it wasn’t on.

“There were people milling around looking confused, older people were turning up in coaches obviously specifically to come to the market, there were lots of annoyed people in Chichester today.

“It seems a mystery as to why it wasn’t on with no information as to why.”

Chichester District Council, which facilitates the market every Wednesday, had posted a notice on its website and on social media this morning saying the city centre market had been cancelled ‘for safety reasons’.

The statement said: “The market operator took the decision because the high winds pose a serious threat to both the public and stall holders.”

Mr Moger added: “Everyone was very confused as to why it was off, people were asking us.

“A member of staff at Robert Dyas didn’t know why it was off and she was disappointed because she said it brings more people into the town to shop.

“Hopefully it will be back next Wednesday because it’s a great market selling all sorts of vegetables, olives and cheeses.”

The market appears in North and East Street each Wednesday, with the Farmers’ Market there every other Friday.
