Plans to build off Peelings Lane are scrapped

Plans to build eight new homes on land off a popular walking and cycle route between Stone Cross and Westham have been shelved.

Developers wanted to knock down Kinketchem, a three bedroom bungalow, and build six three bedroom and two four bedroom houses on the one and a half acre site.

In a planning statement submitted to Wealden council, a spokesperson for the developers said the development was a well-considered and high-quality design and would be a “benefit to the site and its surroundings”.

But campaigners and Westham Parish Council vetoed the development saying Peelings Lane is “an ancient narrow sunken lane used by a constant stream of cyclists, horse riders and walkers as an alternative to the dangerous main road”. They also said there were ancient hedges in the area and evidence of a Roman Road has been found in another part of the lane.

The application was withdrawn after planning officers said it was likely to be refused.
