Coffee Lab in Cathedral Courtyard closed over the weekend.

Comments from readers poured in with many calling it a shame. Others suggested the closure was part of a worrying trend.

Andrew Richardson said: "This is tragic... Fantastic coffee from brilliant baristas! Local people must support independent businesses or we will be swamped with national chains like Costa and Starbucks selling bland euro-coffee!

Sarah Harrop said: "Such a shame to see. I tried the new place in Jays Walk next to the Hole in the Wall pub. Spuddles last week its a great little place great food and very friendly staff. Well worth a try."

Bernadette Pamplin said: "I walk past this place on the way toi work in the morning and it was really nice to see it sytart up and grow through into the shop next door. The City is saturated with coffee shops at the moment and it's a shame that independent businesses fold when there's so many chains about."

Sarah Sharp said: "The shop had always struck me as being more independent and well loved. There is a lot of choice out there and I hope was all think carefully about where we spent our money in order to support small independents as much as we possibly can.

"As they at the Eden Project your 'wallet is your weapon' we can all try to make sensible choices about who gets out money."

Charlotte Herbert said: "Was really good coffee and hot chocolate, such a shame. Probably too tucked away from the main flow of people."

Alex Stanhope said: "Oh no! What a huge shame! Of all the eight thousand coffee places in Chi, this one was actually pretty decent and an independent to boot! #sadtimes"
