The government is encouraging young people to go down the apprenticeship route as an alternative to University and to help fill the skill shortage gap in the U.K.

Isobel completed her Level 3 qualification as a Safety, Health and Environmental Technician with Govia Thameslink safety team at the end of last year.

The course is designed to take a maximum of two years but Isobel was thrilled to complete it in just 15 months.

“My day-to-day responsibilities are largely the same - I support teams across the Thameslink, Southern, Gatwick Express and Great Northern networks

“But since finishing the apprenticeship I feel I have more authority in my role as a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor and it’s given me a real confidence boost.

"My job is focused more on the wellbeing side of things and it’s great to be able to go out and about on our network, carrying out ‘Health on Track’ days for colleagues, working with occupational health.

“I’m also responsible for running company-wide wellbeing events and creating presentations.

“In terms of health and safety, I also look after our reporting app. This helps us look at incidents on the network to see how to avoid and improve repeat incidents.

“I’m also currently doing an audit of our depots to see what can be improved to maximise safety for our colleagues.”
