Retail units - subject to a licensing application by Tesco - are on the market.

Retail units in Lewes Road, which were subject to a licensing application by Tesco last year, are on the market.

Three ground-floor lock-up units - measuring up to 2,206 square feet - are being advertised by Flude, the chartered surveyors and property advisers, with an annual rent of up to £47,250.

Tesco, which was reported to be interested in opening an Express store, told Brighton and Hove Independent it did not own the properties and denied that the recent appearance of advertising boards had anything to do with national reports about a substantial shake-up by Dave Lewis, the supermarket chain's new chief executive.

A spokesperson said Tesco had no plans to open a store in the area.

Land Registry documents show the freehold of 192-195 Lewes Road - along with addresses at 1 and 2 Wellington Road - were bought for £1.3 million in July 2010 by Buttons Farm Limited, a company registered in Cross in Hand, Heathfield, East Sussex.

Earlier plans to redevelop a nearby community garden with housing and shops, including a Tesco supermarket, were strongly resisted in 2010.

Community protesters were eventually evicted from a former Esso garage in Lewes Road, following a year-long campaign. No Tesco Express store ever materialised.
