Upgrade to walking and cycling routes in Burgess Hill

It is part of the Place and Connectivity Programme aimed at making it easier for people to get around Burgess Hill on foot or by bike, providing a boost for sustainable transport.

It promises to create safe, direct and attractive routes to encourage people to choose to walk, cycle and use public transport.

Once completed they will help to better link key work, retail and leisure locations in the town together and support the sustainable growth of the town. 

The works will see upgraded paths across some of the town’s parks and open spaces and to the Green Circle to the south of Burgess Hill.

The council said residents and businesses around the works will be notified and all the projects will make every effort to minimise inconvenience.

Mid Sussex District Council is working on the programme in partnership with West Sussex County Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership Coast to Capital.

Councillor Judy Llewellyn-Burke, deputy leader at Mid Sussex District Council, said: “The start of this work is a significant step towards achieving this ambitious programme.

“We aim to encourage more people to walk and cycle for short journeys and use public transport for longer journeys and make sure both pedestrians and cyclists can get around safely.

“Walking and cycling more and using cars less is good for everyone, it helps make the air cleaner, improves physical fitness and supports mental wellbeing.”

Jonathan Sharrock, chief executive at Coast to Capital, said: “We invested £10.9m Local Growth Funding to the Burgess Hill Place and Connectivity project to improve sustainable connectivity in the town.

“The scheme will greatly benefit businesses and residents in the area and we are delighted to see progress with the project.”
