We’ve just scored a modern classic with 122,000 miles on the clock and about a million more in the locker
Stern woffling sounds like it might be an expensive village in Wiltshire. But in fact it’s what you get from men in sensible jackets when you give them the opportunity to tell you about Mercedes, over-engineering and The Old Days.
The 190E is a Mercedes from The Old Days. If you’ve been around long enough for 1992 to feel quite recent, apologies for that. But anyway, the one you’re looking at here came up for sale recently with 122,000 miles on the clock – and if your jacket has leather patches on its elbows, you’re probably nodding sagaciously and telling a no doubt empty room that this qualifies it as a low-miler.
Ours is a 1.8 auto, the more desirable six-pot being both a lot rarer and no small amount more expensive on the used market.
But what qualifies as expensive in this case? Well, we paid £1300 for it – and that was with the brakes, dampers, exhaust and and even a couple of tyres having been replaced over the course of the summer. It came with nine months’ MOT, too.
It also came with a cracked windscreen, a bit of a rust repair on one wing and a coat of paint that showed the effects of being a quarter of a century old. And while the engine wasn’t taking quite that long to fire up, it was close. You’d also need to like blue interiors.
Happily, we love blue interiors. And we also love our new Mercedes, a car we will be woffling sternly about to anyone who’ll listen.
