Supporters of this charity had a public question and answer session in Horsham town to inform the public about the new bill to be debated in parliament in 6 weeks time. This bill aims to change the law to allow a terminally ill patient with less than 6 months to live to ask for an assisted death.

The new Lib Dem MP John Milne has indicated that he may be supportive of a change in the law and members of the charity 'Dignity in Dying' were talking to the public about why change is needed.

Dr Jon Heatley (a recently retired GP at Holbrook Surgery) explained that for a very few poor patients the end is very unpleasant and they beg to be spared it.

Dignity is campaigning for this to be allowed as it has been in many countries around the world. In none of them is there any movement to reverse the relaxing of the law to allow an assisted death which is reassuring.

The all party parliamentary group looking into the practice worldwide recommended a change in the law.

They noted that a startling 80% of those requesting an assisted death were under hospice care.

Other nearby countries where the law is likely soon to change are Scotland, the Isle of Man, Jersey, and France.

The vote takes place with a back benchers' bill at the end of November and we hope our MP will be there to support change.
