David Calvert has been researching the origins of place names in the two parishes. Pound Field (W): There was, in Windmill Hill, a field called the Pound. This would have been where stray animals were kept until the owner paid to recover them. Interestingly, there was another Pound Field in Wartling, this time part of a property, long since gone, at the eastern end of Boreham Street. It is unusual to have two pounds in one parish, maybe they were used at different times; no records survive. Prinkle Farm (W): In 1675, it was called Great Princles, it was certainly in existence before this date. The name seems to originate from an Adam Prinkel who is recorded in a document of 1296. Puddledock (W): First recorded in 1606, a cottage on the land was described as being ‘lately built’. There are remains of what is believed to have been a dock dating to at least Tudor times. Waller’s haven was navigable in earlier times and goods would have been brought up from Pevensey to Puddledock. In Roman times there was another wharf or dock near Kitchenham Farm. Why puddle is uncertain, however canal beds used puddled clay to make them watertight so this could explain the name. Thank you David.

Norman Honeysett's 50 Years at Boreham Mill Nursery repeat talk. This came about because so many people were disappointed to have missed the occasion after our AGM in February that Norman first came to speak to us. The repeat evening was very well attended. It was a pleasure for members to welcome so many local people who have fond memories not only of Norman's time at Boreham Mill, but also when his father was growing a range of flowers and vegetables, and his mother sold vegetables from the house. Norman and Pat are missed, but they deserve retirement. On 7 November is a talk by Kristina Clode. One of her projects that has won awards is the sensory garden at Sedlescombe Primary School. She has many years of experience in garden design and her ability to produce informal but beautiful planting to fit any type of site always delights her clients. Non-members welcome at 7 for 7.30pm at the Reid Hall, Boreham Street. Entry at £3 and includes refreshments.
