Grace Gentle, who is in Year 1 at the school, was inspired to support the NHS after listening to headteacher Mrs Bradbury’s assembly on kindness.

The six-year-old, who has a new baby sister at home and has been helping her mum and dad with both the baby and her younger brother, decided to take on the 2.6 challenge to raise money for the NHS.

She rode her bike around the family farmyard and outdid herself by riding almost four miles – raising over £250.

Meanwhile two other pupils, Oscar and Amber Hallett-Walsh, aged 8, wrote letters to care home residents to let them know we were thinking of them and to share what they were doing.

They were delighted when they received letters in response from Cornelius House in Fishbourne Road West, Chichester.

A spokesman for Oakwood school said: “We are really encouraging our pupils to consider what they can do to support our local community, key workers, etc.

“We are so proud of how many of them are taking this on board.

“It’s wonderful for them to see how a small act can bring real happiness to others.

“While the necessity of social distancing is hard on our community, it’s a wonderful opportunity for our children to learn really valuable life skills.

“We hope when they look back at this time they will see how much they have grown.”
