Eastbourne beach clean by NCS volunteers

A group of teenagers took part in a beach clean on Eastbourne seafront as part of the National Citizen Service’ Changemakers scheme.

The project was one of many projects around the country planned as part of NCS’s national Action Day.

The group chose to support Plastic Free Eastbourne by conducting a beach clean, while also raising awareness on single use plastics, on their newly adopted patch on the seafront between groynes 18-19.

A group spokesperson said, “The day was a huge success; the sun was shining and the group collected six bags of rubbish.

“The group of Changemakers will be monitoring their sea front patch regularly and are hoping to help support upcoming events with Plastic Free Eastbourne alongside other environmental support organisations.

“They are also spearheading other local social action projects in Eastbourne including the creation of blankets for the homeless from recycled crisp packets, a sponsored walk to raise money for local homeless shelters and environmental groundworks in Gildredge Park.”

Catch 22, a social business which supports the delivery of NCS in the local area, has been supporting the young people to formulate their plans for local social action projects.

William Duke-Oddy from Catch 22 said, “The Action Day beach clean went very well thanks to all the careful thought and planning which the group of Changemakers put into it.

“NCS is a fantastic way of giving young people key life skills while contributing to the local community. More than 40,000 young people have delivered more than one million hours of social action through Catch22’s NCS programmes since it was first piloted in 2009, resulting in some transformative local projects that have made a real difference to people’s lives.”
