East Sussex College bosses are in discussions with Eastbourne District General Hospital staff to grant the NHS a licence to utilise the Kings building – on the college campus in Eastbourne – for use as the Chemotherapy and Infusion Unit from the end of March.

Rebecca Conroy, the interim CEO of East Sussex College, said, ”This would be an amazing use of our buildings and we are working with other public agencies to see what else we can do to support them and our communities in the days and weeks ahead.

“This will really support the hospital’s vital work during this pandemic.”

The East Sussex NHS Healthcare Trust team visited the college site earlier this week (March 24) to see what adjustments and additions would need to be made to the facilities, said a college spokesperson.

The college has announced this proposal ahead of a plea from the NHS for more community support and resources, as Covid-19 puts a strain on both staff and NHS services across the country.

Furthermore, said the spokesperson, the college is stepping up its community efforts and will shortly be asking staff, particularly those with a background in Health & Social Care, to volunteer to deliver services to the community.

The NHS would also be able to utilise parking on the Eastbourne college campus during this time.
