GCSE results 2020: Shoreham College pupils enjoy ‘very strong’ grades

Shoreham College’s pupils have celebrated an impressive set of GCSE results amid difficult circumstances.

Coronavirus closed schools and cancelled exams, leaving pupils’ grades primarily to be decided by teachers’ predictions after a controversial Government algorithm was scrapped.

Almost all of the school’s pupils – 95.2 per cent – were awarded grades 9-4 across all examinations and 94.55 per cent achieved five grades at 9-4, including English and maths.

On average, according to the school, pupils achieved more than half a grade above nationally standardised predictions.

Seth Bristow, with all 8s and 9s, is now heading for BHASVIC to do French, politics and history A-levels and has set his sights on Cambridge.

Toby Adlam was elated to have ‘opened doors’ to do mathematics, chemistry and biology at Worthing College, with a view to taking medicine at university armed with a set of 8s and 9s.

The college saw a significant increase in grades 9-7, rising from last year’s 26 per cent to 35 per cent.

Adam Rogers was ‘over the moon’ to be joining Lancing in September to take up Physics, DT, Mathematics and Further Mathematics as part of his plan to become a pilot.

Evie Newman is looking forward to starting her A-levels in Drama, History, and Sociology and pursuing her plans to do Law at university.

Hannah Pelham is thrilled to be starting her BTEC in Public Uniformed Services at Eastbourne Sixth Form College.

Richard Taylor-West, Shoreham’s headmaster said: “It is excellent to see that for the fifth year running our results have been very strong indeed. The grades awarded by the examination boards were fair; I have no doubt that they realistically reflect the hard work our pupils and staff have put in.

“Our Year 11s did very well in mocks in February, not long before lock-down, and so I am very confident that our pupils got the results they deserved.”
