The coronavirus pandemic caused exams to be cancelled this summer.

Instead, students’ results were based on teacher predictions after the government scrapped a computing algorithm to set marks.

“In my entire career, there has never been a year like this at school and I want to spend today in celebration of the achievements of the 2020 cohort who have had to learn very early that life can throw up some pretty trying times.

“After the shock of school closure back in March, this cohort of 16-year-olds have had to cope with the fact that they would not be able to sit exams. Then they learnt that an algorithm that doesn’t account for individuals would determine their grades.

“Finally, this decision was reversed. And during most of this time, they also had to endure lockdown.

“So today, whatever they received grade-wise, I salute them. They have learnt coping skills and resilience that no GCSE can teach and for that I am proud of each and every one of them.”
