Littlehampton and Angmering schools move up the table

Principal of The Littlehampton Academy, Steve Jewell, said he was delighted by the school’s “overwhelmingly good” exam results, with August’s results proving to be the best since the academy was opened, in 2009.

The proportion of GCSE students gaining five or more A* to C grades rose dramatically from 58 per cent in 2010, to 76 per cent.

There was also an increase in the number of students achieving at least five A* to C grades including English and maths, with 42 per cent hitting the mark, an increase of eight per cent since 2010.

The academy’s results remain among the county’s lowest, leaving the school in 48th place out of 52 West Sussex secondary schools featuring in the league table, based on students gaining five or more A*-C grades at GCSE.

However, the academy has seen a rise in its “value added” (VA) figure, a complex assessment of improvement, showing how much academic “value” has been added to each student since joining the school in year seven.

It achieved a VA score of 990.3 – an increase of more than 20 points compared with 2010’s rating of 970.1.

The Angmering School’s VA score was 978.1.

The Angmering School also excelled with its set of results, showing a steady rise in the proportion of students attaining the vital A* to C grades, including English and maths, since 2007. Last year’s GCSE intake achieved 59 per cent, up from just 44 per cent four years ago.

This score puts Angmering in the top third for state sector schools in the county.

However it remains below Barnham’s St Philip Howard Catholic High School, which scored 69 per cent, and fractionally behind Durrington High School, which achieved 60 per cent in the same category.

Overall, when private schools are included, Angmering lies 35th in the table.
