Littlehampton pupils’ potions make a stirring start to school holidays

IT WAS a legendary last day of term for year-six pupils at River Beach Primary School, Littlehampton.

Their Myths and Legends Day turned out to be a successful saga of activities, including making a mediaeval vegetable broth, watching teachers perform a mummers’ play based on St George and the Dragon, and then creating their own drama.

Children and teachers alike dressed in mythical or legendary costumes, with King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, the Lady of the Lake, and Merlin, as well as Grendle from Beowulf.

There were also opportunities to learn mediaeval dance moves, concoct some of Merlin’s potions, using precise calculations to get the mixture just right, compose music for a mediaeval banquet and take part in team-building activities to qualify as Knights of the Round Table.

“Making the mediaeval broth was excellent, especially was we got to eat it. It tasted exquisite,” said Kayla, 11.

Year-six head Noel Goodwin said: “It was a great day! I was delighted to see so many of the children using their imagination to dress up as a range of characters. Their attitude towards the different tasks was fantastic. What a great way to conclude the term.”
