The school, which had been judged ‘inadequate’ was inspected in December and received a ‘good’ rating – one step away from the top ‘outstanding’ mark.

Mr Quin was given a tour of the school by the house captains and learned firsthand how rigorous testing is in core subjects by joining the children of Year 6 for a spelling test.

Headteacher Helen Williamson said the results of the test were “a state secret”!

Mr Quin said: “Billingshurst Primary is a very happy school with good leadership.

“It was a pleasure to hear such a good news story about their performance. Turning around a school is not easy but Billingshurst has done a terrific job.”

Mr Quin also updated Miss Williamson on the progress of the Worth Less? campaign for fairer school funding.

West Sussex is one of the lowest funded authorities in the country and, with school budgets stretched to breaking point, every headteacher in the county signed up to the campaign calling for more money from the government.

Miss Williamson said: “It was very helpful to hear an update on the Worth Less? Campaign and to be able to share the concerns we have for our school with him.

“The children certainly enjoyed meeting their Member of Parliament.”
