Playgroup staff '˜ecstatic' as Ofsted rating rises to '˜good'

Staff were left 'ecstatic' after their nursery took just 15 months to see its Ofsted rating soar from '˜inadequate' to '˜good'.

The Jane and Peter Community Playgroup, in Rustington, underwent inspections in February and June 2015 and, most recently, on April 21 – and is now one step away from the top ‘outstanding’ rating.

In her report, which was published on May 12, inspector Rebecca Khabbazi said children made good progress and staff acted as good role models.

She added: “The manager and staff team have worked hard to improve their practice and raise the quality of the provision.

“They have taken effective steps to address previous areas of weakness and improve outcomes for children.”

Manager Dee Parlour said: “We are ecstatic that Ofsted recognise the commitment we have towards supporting children’s development.

“Since taking over managing the setting, the fantastic team and I pulled together to address the issues raised since the report in February 2015.

“My deputy Jo Linberry and I constantly reflect and monitor the provision which ensures children can access a rich learning environment that supports their social skills and sets them up for transition to school.”

Ms Khabbazi said children were well prepared for the step up to primary education and added: “They are eager to explore and learn, concentrate well and become absorbed in their play.

“Older children develop good early writing and mathematical skills. They become confident communicators with strong social skills.”

Her report said the good example set by staff meant children learned to treat each other with respect, while staff themselves were quick and consistent when it came to responding to any unwanted behaviour.

Ms Khabbazi raised only two points for further improvement – build on the information already shared with parents to help them extend children’s learning at home, and increase opportunities for children to learn about diversity and the wider world.

She said: “Children do not always have consistent opportunities to learn about different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs, to further support their understanding of diversity.”

Jane and Peter Community Playgroup is a charity, the running of which Dee described as “hard financially”.

As such, she said the playgroup would become part of the Ticklemetoo family from September, operating as the Ticklemetoo Community Playgroup.
