Tykes Pre-School, in Broadfield, was visited by inspector Ann Murray on September 22, less than a year after being rated ‘requires improvement’.

Ms Murray said staff at the pre-school, which is run out of the Broadfield Youth and Community Centre, were “good role models” while the children were “well-mannered and treat one another with respect”.

She added: “Staff receive regular training and support to improve the quality of their practice and teaching. The impact of this can be seen in the improvements made since the last inspection.”

Tykes owner, Victoria Bailey, said: “I’m over the moon. We’ve got a brilliant, brand new team and they’ve worked really hard.”

Ms Bailey had not been impressed with the previous inspection, in October 2014, and said her staff were “quite upset” before Ms Murray’s visit.

They needn’t have worried, though, as Tykes was given ‘good’ across the board while parents sang their praises to Ofsted, describing how they felt “well-informed about their children’s achievements and receive ideas on how to support their children’s learning at home”.

Explaining why Tykes had not yet received the top ‘outstanding’ rating, Ms Murray’s report said more needed to be done to develop children’s counting skills during play activities; and the partnership with parents needed to be further strengthened.

Those points aside, the report praised the progress made by children and the work done to build their confidence and independence.

She added: “As a result, they are prepared effectively for their move to school.”
