A lack of “consistently good” teaching was among the issues raised following an inspection at Chesswood Junior School on November 24/25.

The only area judged to be ‘good’ by inspector Theresa Phillips and her team was the personal development, behaviour and welfare of the children.

In her report, which was published on December 16, Ms Phillips said leaders needed to improve teaching at Chesswood to ensure all pupils, including the most-able and disadvantaged children, made good progress.

She explained the work set did not always challenge the most-able pupils, while those from disadvantaged backgrounds did not make good enough progress to catch up with their peers.

Chesswood changed from a middle school to a junior school as part of the recent reshuffle of education in Worthing, and more than half of the children on the roll joined the school in September. Ms Phillips’ report recognised the demands the changes – along with extensive building work at the school – had placed on headteacher Andrew Jolley and his team.

Describing leaders as having shown “high levels of commitment to lead the school through a period of considerable change”, she added: “The demands of these changes on the school leadership led to a reduction in the level of monitoring and leaders have not ensured that teaching is good throughout the school.”

Listing the school’s strengths, she praised the behaviour of the children, the support received from parents and the strong spiritual, moral and cultural development at Chesswood.
