Former King’s Academy Ringmer student, Bluebell Nicholls, went back to school on Friday, January 24 where she gave an assembly and hosted a Q&A for students wishing to go to university.

She left the school in 2015 with 3 A*s and 6 A grades before going on to study A level history at Varndean College.

During her time at Varndean, Bluebell’s application to study Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic history and language at King’s College, Cambridge was accepted.

Now in her third year, she was invited back to Ringmer by two teachers to speak to the current cohort about her journey, and to encourage students to set ambitious goals.

Transition and marketing manager at King’s Academy, Jamie Peacock, said: “It was an absolute honour to have Bluebell back, a truly inspirational visit that all our students could relate to. We wish you all the best Bluebell and hope to see you again soon!”

Bluebell kept in contact with the school and, in particular, leader of history at the school, Natalie Moorhouse, who encouraged her to apply to Cambridge University.

Mrs Moorhouse was one of two students from her Brighton secondary school, and the first in her family, to go to university and she also attended Cambridge.

PE Teacher Paula Peters also kept in touch with Bluebell, who discovered her passion for rugby in Year 8 after Mrs Peters introduced an after school club.

Among Bluebell’s latest achievements is a signing by top women’s rugby team, Saracens.

Jamie Peacock said: “Hopefully, the visit will inspire our students to persist with their own rugby; many of our girls are enjoying playing for Lewes and Uckfield and are looking forward to starting an after school club this term.”
