Carnegie long-listed children’s author Jane McLoughlin came to St Paul’s Catholic College in Burgess Hill last Friday and as well as cutting a ribbon to open the library or Learning Resources Centre (LRC), she held a number of writing workshops.

Jane also launched an accelerated reader scheme, which encourages year seven children to become book worms and extend the range of books they read.

Jane is known for her novel ‘Yellow Lake’, a thriller for older children involving three central characters who stumble on a “horrifying crime”.

Fortunately, there were no dastardly goings-on in the library at St Paul’s but pupils did learn a few secrets on how to produce a gripping read.

In a tweet to St Paul’s after her visit, Jane wrote: “I was proud to open your LRC and delighted to meet so many talented writers.”

Friday’s event was also attended by Burgess Hill Mayor Chris Thomas-Atkins who presented students with certificates and specially designed badges to celebrate their reading achievements.

Reading underpins literacy across the whole curriculum at St Paul’s.
