Tributes to ‘much-loved and respected’ former headteacher of Funtington Primary School
Joy Arrowsmith was the headmistress at the school in Heather Close for 16 years, from 1995 to her retirement in 2011.
She retained a long-serving and loyal staff and these, together with many of the parents and governors involved with the school, remained personal friends.

Hide AdJoy was born in 1946 and met and married her childhood sweetheart, Mike, before training as a teacher, specialising in teaching the deaf and deaf-blind.
Her work in this area was rewarding, but challenging, as it involved dealing with many difficult family situations and vulnerable children.
Joy and Mike had three children and, after a period at home, she returned to teaching.
After taking on the Headship at Funtington, she worked hard to improve the performance of the school and expand the facilities, including the addition of a new classroom, a computer suite and a library.

Hide AdThroughout her tenure, Joy’s over-riding aim was to help every child fulfil their potential and feel safe, valued and cared for during their primary education.
Joy’s last day at school was definitely memorable, as one of her gifts was a surprise helicopter flight around the local area.
Enormous excitement was caused throughout the entire school when the helicopter landed on the playing field to collect her.
In retirement, Joy enjoyed gardening, walking, catching up with friends and travelling.

Hide AdUndoubtedly though, her greatest pleasure was spending time with her family and making memories with her six beloved grandchildren.
Joy influenced numerous lives at Funtington Primary School with her calm, thoughtful, and caring attitude.
She remained an advisor, supporter and friend to many in the local area and will be hugely missed by all who knew her and her loving and devoted family.
