Working hard to honour the Bard

There was much ado about Shakespeare when students at St Wilfrid's School, Crawley, marked the 400th anniversary of the Bard's death.

Lessons for the 11-14-year-olds in Key Stage 3 were dominated by the man whose words had an immeasurable influence on our language and culture.

The students attended classes including Elizabethan portraiture and woodcut designs, the plague, early theatre special effects, prop and costume design and Shakespeare and religion.

They even took part in an insult rap and created an insult app for their phones because, let’s face it, when it came to insults, Shakespeare was unbeatable.

Take this gem from All’s Well That Ends Well, Act III Scene 6: “A most notable coward, an infinite and endless liar, an hourly promise-breaker, the owner of no one good quality.”

Proof of the highest quality that you don’t need to swear to insult people!

The week was organised by staff member Jenny Hardy who said: “The reason we did it is because it’s the 400th anniversary and I have a particular love of Shakespeare and I thought it would be great to try to make some of them aware of the anniversary and the importance of Shakespeare to our culture.”

As for the students, Jenny said they were “super excited” to have taken part. She added: “I got some really lovely feedback. I think some of them didn’t realise how much he has influenced society.”

St Wilfrid’s also released two videos to mark the anniversary; one featuring headteacher Michael Ferry as Henry V, delivering the unforgettable ‘Once more unto the breach’ speech to a crowd of admiring students.
