CCG reacts to South Downs health contract decision

Coastal West Sussex health chiefs have expressed disappointment at the termination of talks regarding orthopaedic services in West Sussex.

This morning (Monday January 26) Bupa CSH announced it would not be continuing with the procurement process to run musculo-skeletal clinics across the county.

Fears were that if successful it could have pulled skills and resources away from accident and emergency departments at Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, and therefore put those departments at risk.

The result of an impact assessment into its possible effect on other services was due to be announced soon.

Dr Katie Armstrong, Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group clinical chief officer, said: “We are disappointed, but understand and accept, the Bupa CSH position.

“This procurement has always had one key driver, improving the care for patients with musculoskeletal problems in Coastal West Sussex. Bupa CSH’s bid was very strong, they echo our patient values and would have been a good partner to work with in Coastal West Sussex.

“The CCG remains committed to improving outcomes for our MSK patients, we need time to discuss the options with our board but expect to be able to outline our next steps shortly.”
