The half-marathon, in its 36th year and organised by the Hastings Lions Club, was in doubt due to the coronavirus outbreak, which has seen Governments globally cancelling public events or busy gatherings to slow the spread of the disease.

But today (March 14), race director Eric Hardwick announced the 2020 event, which was due to take place at 10.30am on Sunday, March 29, was cancelled.

He said they had decided to take action in light of what he saw as indecision from the Government.

The race organiser went on to say: "We have decided to be proactive in the interests of our runners, spectators, volunteers and suppliers, because the health of everyone concerned is more important than a marathon."

Last year's event raised more than £250,000 for good causes locally last year via sponsorships, Eric said, so he encouraged those runners to do a 'virtual' half-marathon on a treadmill to obtain the 'precious money for those in need'.

All entrants will get free entry for next year's event on Sunday, March 21, 2021.

The lions club also received nearly £70,000 last year through the marathon which it gave to good causes - and missing out on this was a 'wicked situation', Eric said. But he hoped everyone would understand.

This comes after the Brighton Marathon was postponed until September due to the virus.

The half-marathon is one of the biggest events in the town calendar, with thousands of spectators and supporters lining the route to cheer on those taking part. Take a look at some photos from last year's event.
