Eastbourne homeless charity expands

Due to an increase in demand, an Eastbourne charity is to expand its services to assist with what it calls “the ever-rising needs of the homeless community” in the town.

Warming Up The Homeless already offers an outreach service every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday offering hot food, breakfast packs, toiletries, clothes and bedding to the homeless population in the town.

However, a new Saturday round is being introduced from this weekend (Saturday September 19).

The charity also has an Advocacy Unit, a team of healthcare professionals and its 200 plus volunteers are all DBS checked.

Volunteers say the weekly rounds in Eastbourne has seen a steady increase in demand for its services, with between 70-95 homeless clients seen each evening. Warming Up The Homeless CEO Trudy Hampton said, “The COVID pandemic has seen an increase in the need for the work we do.

“We spotted a gap in what was being offered by us and other organisations so we have decided to expand into Saturday evening to ensure our homeless community do not go without. I cannot thank our sponsors or volunteers enough, the vital work that we do simply would not be possible without them.”
