The decision was taken due to rising Covid-19 cases.

Primary schools were due to reopen next Monday (January 4) and could remain closed until the measures are reviewed again by January 18, the Government said.

Hastings and Rother was put under tougher Tier 4 restrictions on December 20 following the discovery of a new variant of the virus, which scientists said is more transmissible than older variants.

They also said a large number of cases associated with the new variant were concentrated in London and the South East.

In the Commons today, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said primary schools in affected areas were being kept closed ‘only as a last resort’.

He said: “In a small number of areas where the infection rates are highest we will implement our existing contingency framework such as only vulnerable children and children of critical workers will attend face to face.

“The areas will be reviewed regularly so that the schools can reopen at the earliest moment.”

Hastings and Rother is one of nearly 50 areas where primary schools will not open on Monday, except for vulnerable pupils and for children of key workers.
