In a statement, Seaford Bonfire Society said it has had to make the ‘difficult decision’ to postpone the event.

A spokesman said: “As we all know the Covid-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption this year, with the Government’s current advice on social distancing set to be the new normal for some time to come.

“The committee has been in regular contact discussing how we could put on a large public event safely for the people of Seaford, our members and visitors.

“Sadly we have had to take the difficult decision to postpone our event on October 17, which would have been our tenth anniversary event since re-forming.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, but we have a duty of care to ensure that we put on a safe event - clearly we cannot guarantee to do this as things stand.”

They said irrespective of what government guidelines might be in October, planning the bonfire night goes on all year, and it is in these summer months that members traditionally get together to make torches and build our Tableaux.

“Clearly social distancing has put paid to this preparation as would not wish to put any of our members at risk,” they added.

“Rest assured we will be back in 2021 with an even bigger bonfire night to celebrate our postponed tenth year!”
