East Sussex Healthcare NHS trust proposes to extend the current ED to form an admissions zone for patients who are ambulatory but need emergency care.

The proposals, which are available on the Eastbourne council planning website, would extend the current ambulance bays and provide a new ambulance drop-off zone.

This would allow staff to move patients through to treatment via more than one zone – a change that is aimed at reducing the time patients spend in the ED.

The site for the plans is to the west of the main hospital buildings, which are visible from Kings Drive across the existing carpark.

Access to this new site would be at the Rodmill Roundabout, as well as a secondary estate entrance on Kings Drive.

These changes would see the removal of the existing four ambulance drop-off bays, and the replacement of three of them in an adjacent area.

The extensions won’t impact pedestrian movement around the area or the disabled parking bays, the planning document says.

Comments are being taken until October 29, after which a decision will be made.
