Macmillan event at Sedgwick Park

Macmillan Cancer Support hosted a reception at Horsham’s Sedgwick Park, part of a UK-wide programme of events highlighting the importance of making wills yesterday.

The programme was developed after research by OnePoll last April found one in three people in the South East find wills and death amongst the most difficult topics to discuss, despite 36 per cent stating that leaving a legacy to friends, family or charity boosts feelings of well-being.

Lynda Thomas, Macmillan’s national director of fundraising, encouraged local people to consider the importance of having a professionally written will and highlighted the benefits of legacy giving.

She said at the reception: “Here in West Sussex, amongst other things, Macmillan is giving over £340,000 to fund four Macmillan GPs, which includes a Macmillan GP and Macmillan Practise Nurse Facilitator in Brighton and Hove.

“This is all thanks to the generous donations we receive from supporters – a third of which comes from gifts left in peoples’ wills.”

She added: “Legacies are so important to Macmillan and make up more than a third of our funding.

“Large or small every gift makes a difference, we couldn’t do what we do without them.”
