The pledge reinforces the long list of work already being carried out, such as training staff to recognise and respond to potential signs of slavery and supporting victims and survivors within the district.

During a meeting of the full council, Norman Webster (Con, East Grinstead – Baldwins) said more than 40 million people worldwide had fallen foul of slavery and human trafficking – most of whom were women and children.

He added: “Action now needs to be taken to raise awareness of modern slavery and that it could be happening right under our noses.”

He was supported by Gary Marsh (Con, Ardingly & Balcombe), who said the council had ‘worked proactively to eradicate this despicable practice’ but warned: “This is a problem happening within our district boundary right now.”

Mr Marsh added: “This council has helped to release from modern slavery people who have been coerced and made to work in various sectors. They include car washes, nail bars and the fast food sector to name a few.”

The council is already part of the West Sussex anti-slavery network, which is funded by the Police & Crime Commissioner.

Anti-Slavery Day will be held on October 18.
