“Unlike previous years, many of the FY1 doctors have already had some months experience of working in hospital as they have helped to support clinical teams across the country during the coronavirus crisis.

“We wish all our new doctors every success as they progress their medical careers.”

After completing medical degrees, the next part of training as a doctor involves a two-year foundation programme - foundation year one (FY1) and foundation year two (FY2), according to ESHT.

This usually involves six different rotations or placements in medical or surgical specialties, according to ESHT, to allow for the development of a range of clinical and non-clinical skills.
