THE many patrons of Messrs. Dennett and Co., of 6, Western Road, Bexhill, will be interested to hear that this enterprising firm of coal merchants have introduced a steam motor wagon into their business.

The great advantage to be obtained is, as Messrs. Dennett and Co. inform us, they will be in a position to deliver a load of 7 tons in one journey.

It is undoubtedly necessary nowadays that the most expeditious methods of transacting business should be employed and our readers will see that with this innovation Messrs. Dennett and Co. fully intend to keep pace with the times and keep their patrons' interests to the forefront.

The builders are Messrs. Aveling and Porter, of Rochester, from whence it was delivered yesterday, a distance of approximately 50 miles.

TO London for 3s. 6d.(17.5p) The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway will run an excursion to London on Wednesday next. The train will leave Bexhill at 1.29p.m. and the fare will be 3s. 6d.

Bright sunshine streaming through the windows of the cafeteria made it almost uncomfortably warm inside.

So hot, in fact, was the sun that butter on the tables began to melt and the cheese showed signs of softening.

BY a one-vote majority on Wednesday the Town Council rejected an amendment which sought to prevent development on the site of the Old Forge at Sidley for 12 two-bedroom council houses.

THE most noticeable local effects of the national ban on overtime by the Union of Post Office Workers, apart from pleas to the public to use the telegraph service only in an emergency, have been the suspension, which came into force on Monday, of the inland parcels service and Friday's suspension of the 4d. post.

WITH planning permission granted for the conversion of the semi-detached property, 1, Amherst Road, into a Meals On Wheels centre and dining club for elderly residents, the Friends of the Elderly are now going ahead with the acquisition of the property.

THE Home Office has confirmed that Rother councillors will have to face two district elections in two years '“ at a cost to ratepayers of more than 15,000.

This is because of proposed boundary changes which will affect Sackville and St Mark's wards in May. This will entail another poll next year.

ABSENTEEISM '“ up a third in some junior schools '“ is playing havoc with school registers and local service. The culprit is a flu big which has taken a grip on the community.

NEW railway stations would make life sweeter for visitors and residents in Bexhill and Hastings in the 1990s.

People could hop off and on trains at Glyne Gap '“ just right for the new shops and leisure development '“ and at Wilting, to the north and west of Hastings towards Crowhurst.

The new stations are the hopes of transport group pressure group, East Sussex Transport 2000.

A THREAT to the future of the town's Citizens' Advice Bureau should be lifted with a 6,000 council grant for a part-time manager.

A new policy by the National Association of Citizens' Advice Bureaux meant offices without a paid manager were threatened with explusion.

SENSITIVE and thorough landscaping '“ and a hefty contribution to a countryside park '“ were the only ways to make the planned sewage works at Pebsham acceptable, Rother council's planning committee decided on Thursday. Councillors agreed to register no objection, but with a list of conditions to be put to East Sussex County Council, which will make the final decision.

A SEXUAL health advice service for young people opens at The Grid youth centre on Monday. It is opening in response to figures which show Bexhill and Hastings has a high level of unplanned pregnancy.

A local doctor and nurse will be at The Grid on Monday evenings from 5.30pm-8pm and the nurse only on Fridays at the same time.
