1908

TO give a helping hand to the many unemployed in the town and district, the Rev E. Mortlock (Vicar of St. Barnabas') and Canon T.T. Churton (Rector of Bexhill) propose to establish a labour yard. They fully recognise that the local authorities have done all they possibly could in assisting to alleviate the lot of the "out of work" man, notwithstanding the efforts of the Corporation, who are out of work, and as a consequence they intend to try to remedy matters a little by providing a labour yard on the lines of the Church Army.

ON Monday, in the Mission Room, Suffolk Street, Sidley, those who have been meeting together for some time past as members of the Young Men's Club, met together for the purpose of re-starting the club, under rules and a committee. Before the business of the meeting was commenced, tea was given to all of those members of the club who had made at least six attendance since November 1st.

THE Bexhill Chamber of Commerce held their third annual outing on Wednesday when a party of 60, comprising members and their staffs, visited the Victoria Palace, London, for a performance of "The Gang Show." The party arrived in London in time for tea before going to the show, which all enjoyed.

PARENTS of the boys of the Down County Secondary Modern School who stay for school dinners complain that the meals are often cold when served. The parents say that by the time the meals, which are prepared at the central kitchen in London-road, are served, the food is no longer hot and the boys will not eat it.

1968

WITH only three days to go before the Town Council discusses demolishing the Manor House, the Old Town Preservation Society is urging that more consideration be given to the future of this historic building. In a 10-point plea, the society wants the council to aim at preserving the greater part of the Manor House and to enlarge the area at present designated for a public open space.

BOTH the bar and the catering services at the De La Warr Pavilion are doing better than expected. A surplus of 2,698 had been estimated for the period April to December, but in fact a surplus of 4,154 was achieved. The estimated surplus for the bar was 3433, the actual surplus being 4,779.

UNCERTAINTY over 160,000-worth of Government aid has led to men being laid off the biggest series of sea defence projects attempted in Bexhill. Contractors Reed and Mallik Ltd. Paid off an eight-man groyne-building gang at the 1m-plus Beaulieu Road site two days after a Government inspection.

BEXHILL's newest primary school has opened its doors and it already off to a flying start. Pebsham Primary School has got everything going for it. It shares one of the finest sites in town with views over sea and country. The semi open-plan design incorporates the latest in educational thinking. Headmaster Mr Robert Platt has recruited an enthusiastic young team about him.

1988

A SINGLE person living in a detached house in Cooden would save 724 a year if Community Charge was imposed immediately, but three adults in a terraced house in Sidley would pay 465 more, latest figures show. New figures released by Rother treasurer Mr Albert Willis confirm that the estimated payment would be 251 for every Rother adult - 75 a head more than it need be.

1998

YOUNG children are going shopping for drugs for their parents in Sidley and drugs are peddled daily in Bexhill and Little Common. These shocking claims were made at a major public meeting on the fight against drugs. And local drugs help agencies have teachers, solicitors, police officers, as well as the unemployed, on their books, the meeting heard.

A GANG of youths fought police in shocking town centre scenes on Saturday night. One bystander said between 30 and 40 youths were involved. Two policemen were injured and nine young people ended up in the cells. Trouble started when a window was smashed at the Phoenix Inn Chinese takeaway by the Sackville Road roundabout.
