Magnificent Middle Road football team

Brian Borrer, of Hill Farm Way, Southwick, sent in this photo of the old Middle Road School football team from 1953/54.

Brian, pictured second from right on the front row, said: “It was a good side to play in, and it was the second eleven which won the Barlow Cup and Division 3 B League, for the Under 14s.

“They won 13 out of 14 matches and drew the other one, scoring 75 goals and conceding only nine.”

Brian also added that three members of the team – R. Gridley, J. Howells and B. Kingsbury – were picked to play for Brighton Boys, who reached the final of the English School Shield.

Brian was picked to play for the Brighton Boys in the year below, along with T. Barnett.
