The Queen visits Horsham in March 1978

On March 10, 1978, the Queen visited Horsham to officially open the new Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School on Comptons Lane.

Crowds cheered as she arrived from Chichester by Rolls Royce, passing through Petworth, Pulborough, Billingshurst and Horsham town centre.

The then chairman of Horsham District Council, Avocet Phelps, said after the visit: “Parts of the town had banners and pennants erected on the royal route. The roads the procession used were lined with crowds with many children waving flags.

“All in all it was a memorable occasion for the town and I felt very proud of it.”
